and cry for your sin (repent of your sins)".
Another asked: "Which Islam is best?"
He said: "Feed people, greet the one whom you know and whom you don't know".
Others asked: "Which Muslims are the best?"
He (PBUH) said: "The one from whose tongue and hands the Muslims are secure".
Others asked: "Which deeds are the best?"
He (PBUH) said: "To believe in Allah and His Apostle".
They asked: "Then what is the next?"
He (PBUH) said: "Participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause".
They asked: "Then what is next?"
He (PBUH) said: "Perform blessed pilgrimage to Mecca" (i.e. accepted by Allah, performed with the intention of seeking Allah's pleasure only and not to show off, without committing a sin and in accordance with the traditions of the Prophet).
The Prophet (PBUH) used to have good understanding of the youth. A young man came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said to him: "Oh Messenger of Allah, permit me to commit adultery".
The Companions scolded him and said: "What… what!!
The Prophet said: "Come close to me". The young man came near to the Prophet (PBUH) and the latter asked him: "Do you like adultery for your mother?
The young man said: "No, by Allah, I don't. May Allah make my soul sacrificed for you".
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "So do people. Do you like it for your daughter?"
The young man said: "No, by Allah, I don't. May Allah make my soul sacrificed for you".
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "So do people. Do you like it for your sister?"
The young man said: "No, by Allah, I don't. May Allah make my soul sacrificed for you".
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "So do people. Do you like it for your (paternal) aunt?"
The young man said: "No, by Allah, I don't. May Allah make my soul sacrificed for you".
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "So do people. Do you like it for your (maternal) aunt?"
The young man said: "No, by Allah, I don't. May Allah make my soul sacrificed for you".
Then the Prophet (PBUH) put his hand on the young man and invoked Allah saying: "Oh Allah, forgive his sin, purify his heart, and make him chaste".
After which the young man never thought of committing adultery.
This was the method the Prophet (PBUH) in treating the youth, sponsoring them, and directing them, even if they were fond of carnal desires.
He (PBUH) employed advice, but at the same time, he appealed to the Exalted Allah to invoke Him for them.
He (PBUH) instructed some of his Companions to learn foreign languages so that this incident became present in the honored life. Zaid Bin Thabet said: "The Prophet (PBUH) ordered me to learn Syriac".
The Prophet (PBUH) was not satisfied only with giving them theoretical instructions. He also practiced practical education as well, to the young and the small:
He (PBUH) passed by a lad flaying a ewe. He (PBUH) said to the lad: "move aside so that I teach you how to slay it".
The Prophet (PBUH) put his hand between the skin and the meat till he reached the armpit. Then he said: "Oh boy, this is the way of slaying the ewe". Then he went away to lead the Muslims in prayer.
This is the practice of the Ruler of the Ummah; the Jurist of the Ummah; the Reciter of the Holy Qur'an, to whose recital the mountain shook in awe; the Great Instructor; the Master of all human beings; and the Master of Adam's children… . He (PBUH) passed by a lad slaying a ewe, got down and taught the lad how to slay the ewe by his own honored hands. Oh Messenger of Allah, peace, blessings and salutations of Allah be upon you.
He (PBUH) called for the popularization of education so that education would not be restricted to some and prevented from others. This method of his was the earliest call of encompassing all people in education. Referring to Al Ash'ariyyin, he (PBUH) said:
"Why don't some people teach their neighbors legal knowledge, nor do they instruct them, exhort them, enjoin them to do good and prohibit them from doing evil? Why don't some people learn (something beneficial), legal knowledge or wisdom from their neighbors? By Allah, if some people do not teach their neighbors legal knowledge, wisdom or anything beneficial, and enjoin them to do good and prohibit them from doing evil, and if some people do not learn from their neighbors knowledge and wisdom, they will have hasty punishment in this life".
The Prophet (PBUH) directs the Ummah to good morality and worship, in addition to his directing them to economy and material values, because he (PBUH) teaches us integration and balance between the corporeal and meaning, between body and soul. He (PBUH) said: "The Exalted Allah hates three matters for you: Gossip, squandering wealth, and too much inquiry".
The Prophet (PBUH) prohibits squandering wealth to draw the attention to the material value that this Ummah should be heedful of.
He (PBUH) also directs the Ummah to industry. Answering a question about the best deeds, he said: "To help a worker or do good for a person who cannot work for himself."
He (PBUH) directs the Ummah also to agriculture. He said: "Whoever has a land, let him cultivate it, and if he does not, let his brother do".
He (PBUH) draws the attention to the value of the land that the people of economy know well, and that it is one of the elements of production. He said: "Whoever builds up a land that does not belong to anyone, he is more deserving to have it".
He (PBUH) decides that the land is the possession of Allah, and that the slaves belong to Allah too. He said: "Whoever brings a wasteland to life, he is more deserving to have it".
He (PBUH) did not neglect the importance of the land, as it is one of elements of production. Moreover, he made the opportunity open for all people to invest this proactive element and employ it properly.
He (PBUH) directs society to a method that would preserve its discipline. In the Farewell Pilgrimage, he (PBUH) said:
"Your blood, properties and honor are as sacred to one another as this day of yours in this town of yours (i.e., Mecca), in this month of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners.
Every usury in the period of Ignorance shall stand cancelled and you will have only your capital back. Allah has forbidden interest. Bloods of the period of Ignorance are cancelled too.
Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves and revert to disbelief after me by striking the necks of one another.
O People, it is true that you have certain rights over your women, but they also have rights over you. Treat your women well and be kind to them.
Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it is given freely and willingly.
O People, All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good deeds.
He used the method of exhortation:
Between instructing and directing, he (PBUH) used to soften the hearts of his Companions by exhortation, and talk to them in a way that would make their hearts tender..
Ibn Masud (ABPWH) said: "The Messenger of Allah used to sometimes to favor us with exhortation lest we feel bored".
Al 'Arbad Bin Sariyah (ABPWH) said:
"The Messenger of Allah delivered a sermon that made our hearts frightened and our eyes shed tears.
We said: 'Oh Messenger of Allah, it seems as if it were a farewell sermon. Do exhort us'.
He said: 'I recommend you to be devoted to Allah; listen and obey the ruler even if he were a black slave. You will find great difference after me, so stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the guided Rashidin Caliphs. Adhere to them and hold them fast. Beware of novelties in religion. Every heresy is a misguidance".
Oh our Master, our Imam, our Beloved, our Full Moon, the Light of our eyes, the waited for Savior in this pitch-dark night so that we benefit and all mankind benefit too from your lights, peace be upon you.
Oh Messenger of Allah, Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon you…; we are in need for you good manners…; we are in need for your instructions…; we are in need for following your deeds…; we are in need for being guided by your words…; we are in need for learning from your patience..; we are in need for benefiting from your steadfastness… .
Allahum…, we entreat You to make the love of our Master, Muhammad (PBUH), in our hearts stronger than any other love, and more desired than cool water when we are thirsty, oh Allah.
Allahum…, we entreat You to make us be guided by him and be followers of him (PBUH).
Allahum…, make this honored month, the month of the Prophet's birthday (PBUH), an occasion that makes our hearts be illuminated by the lights of this Full Moon, and make us from those who listen to wisdom and follow the best of it.
I say my words and ask Allah's forgiveness. and cry for your sin (repent of your sins)".
